God is a Gift – Book Review

by Seth Roach on June 12, 2013

Doug Reed is an author who has experienced the reality of truth he writes about. His statements convey in a deep way the Life of Christ using very pregnant words. Doug Reed breathes the reality of Christ as gift to us in a way that only someone who knows Him can.

I thought to myself if this book is anything like the introduction then I am in for a rich ride. It has been difficult to get through in a good way since each sentence is so packed full of light.

This book is similar in ways to “The Normal Christian Life” by Watchman Nee and in my opinion just as indispensable.

The author brings in a new way of looking at the fall of man and God’s purpose that I had never heard before but found it to be very insightful.

Some chapter titles in this book are:

  • From the Beginning
  • The Two Trees
  • The Return of the Gift
  • Participation in the Gift
  • Opposition to the Gift
  • The Kingdom of God is Bigger than Being Right
  • The Cross
  • The Meaning of the Rent Veil
  • Paul and the Law
  • Dead to the Law?
  • Know Your Mountain
  • Our Wilderness Journey: Conquered by Love
  • Seeing
  • The Life
  • The Prodigal
  • Worship
  • Intimacy with God
  • Seeing Further

As you can tell by the chapter titles the flow and richness of this book.

In Chapter 1 Doug Reed makes an interesting and thoughtful statement regarding the Genesis garden of Eden narrative. He states that he doesn’t believe God had a plan B but provided the opportunity for the fall with the intention of using it to bring us to a much higher purpose.

He states, “The Garden was beautiful, but humanity could never find its destiny in the Garden alone. The beauty and abundance of Eden was merely a reflection of a greater gift, as created things can never complete a human being. Though the finite creation was marvelous, God intended humanity to find completeness in the infinite – His presence – on Earth.”

This is a book I would endorse and encourage every believer to read.
